If you have big dreams and vision for your life, but it seems to you that they are impossible to achieve, keep on reading… Learn what is the key to succeed in career and life.
If you are following me on Instagram or reading my blog and articles for a while, then you know that I am not coming from a very rich background and from country with a lot of possibilities and opportunities to succeed and grow. Also, at the moment I’m living in a country (India) where people make a weird facial expression and ask me: “Life… what??!?” when I tell them what I do. Despite all the limitations I was facing and not so fruitful environment to succeed I achieved some amazing things over the last five years: I created a region wide successful vegetarian blog in the country where people almost swear in eating meat, I was earning my income for almost three years by writing, which is kind of fantasy and seems impossible in both Bosnia and Herzegovina and in India. I also became a life coach working with international clients via Skype, who was featured in major international publications (The Huffington Post, Tiny Buddha, The Inspired Coach…) even while not being an English native speaker and not having prior any English speaking social media followers or audience or money to afford an advertising campaign or branding… So, I am the example that living the dream and achieving amazing things even while having many limitations and even it seems impossible, is possible. In this post, I’m going to share what I found to be a secret to success in career and life (even if the success you are dreaming off seems impossible to achieve).
KEY TO SUCCESS #1: PAY IT BACK FORWARD
I see so many people quitting on their goals too soon or complaining that there is no money, there are no clients, they are working so hard, but there are no results… The thing is that you need to shift from this self-centred mindset. Yes, self-centred! Yes, it is good to have goals and expect certain results and achievements, but the basic rule here that in order to succeed we need to pay it back forward, You need to be of service first.
What do I mean by paying it back forward?
I see so many people starting a blog or online business complaining that they are not earning any or enough money or they are lacking the opportunities. Well, the secret is that it is the other way around: you need to first build a poplular blog and audience and then only you will get the opportunities not only to earn money but also to be invited to events, get featured in media, to collaborate with brands and important people in your niche, to get published as a book author and much more…
Same goes with selling anything. I remember back in my college days I used to sell cosmetics to earn some pocket money and I always had orders. How? I was gifting many of those cosmetic products to my friends and family members for their birthdays and occasions. Once they would try it they would love it and they would order it next time. Selling something? Share free samples, gift your work, organise giveaways, if possible offer free trial. Once people try it and get to know and experience how good it is, then only they will be willing to pay you for it!
Same goes if you are selling services: offer to help people for free and ask them to give you referrals if they are satisfied later. If you have results to show behind your work, success stories of your clients, people who worked with you are praising your work and talking about you and your services to their friends… well, then only you will have a list of clients willing to work with you.
If you want to get a promotion, show that you have needed skills: help your colleagues with things you are good at, stay overtime, over deliver, perform well, make yourself so useful to your employer that much that he or she will not be able to replace you so easily with just any other person with same education and work experience as yours. Then you can ask for a raise or promotion. Then it is very likely that you will not be required even to ask for a raise or promotion: they will offer it to you! As the lead character of the Bollywood movie “3 Idiots” (if you have not watched it yet, do it ASAP, you can find it on YouTube) would say:
“Follow the excellence, and success will chase you!”
But, the law is simple: you have to pay it forward, not the other way around! You have to show how good you are, what you are capable of, what you can give, how much valuable service you can provide, how good your product is, how good teacher, instructor, speaker or… whatever you are!
Because, let’s face it: people will not know how good you are unless they see it and believe it! People will not give their hard earned money for your products or service just like that! Why would they? Why they should trust you? Why they should take a risk with you or your products or your service or hire you when there are so many others out there, perhaps even cheaper than you waiting in line to get their money.
YOU NEED TO BUILD A SOCIAL PROOF AND BUZZ AROUND YOUR PERSONA, YOUR SERVICES, YOUR PRODUCT, YOUR SKILLS! YOU NEED TO SHOW HOW GOOD YOU ARE. YOU NEED TO HAVE RESULTS AND GOOD WORD BEHIND YOU. YOUR WORK NEEDS TO SPEAK FOR ITSELF BUT YOU NEED TO MAKE OTHER PEOPLE ALSO SPEAK ABOUT YOUR WORK! YOU NEED TO BUILD YOUR BRAND, YOUR NAME AND YOUR REPUTATION FIRST AND THEN ASK FOR BUSINESS!
KEY TO SUCCESS #2: STAND OUT BY MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Along with paying it back forward this is if you ask me the true secret to success: stand out by making an impact and a difference! What do I mean by that?
Try to remember some people, blogs, websites, restaurants, authors, coffee shops… who are very dear to you. Now, imagine that they close their business or they shut down their blog or their website. How would you feel? You would miss them, right? Because they made an impact and a difference, or offered a memorable experience to you and without them your life would not be the same or your days would be less enjoyable.
If you can create this impact with your customers, with your clients, with people you serve or work for… then you can consider yourself successful! If your work or shop or product or service made an impact on somebodies life, then you succeeded!
It is never just about the coffee, just about your service, your class, your product or your blog post or your whatever… it is about the impact you make in people’s lives. It is about the experience that you provide to your clients, students, customers… It is about the difference you make in somebody’s life. If you can provide that, then you will succeed beyond your wildest dreams!
If you can make people fall in love with your blog, your words, your service, your brand, your product, your teaching, your class, your coffee, your sandwich or your book… that’s what will make you and your brand, your name and your presence stand out and those clients, students, customers… will keep coming back for more or they will be talking about you to everybody they meet on the street. You do not need better advertisement or strategy to succeed than this one!
KEY TO SUCCESS #3: CHOICES THAT YOU MAKE WILL MAKE YOU OR BRAKE YOU
I remember back in my college days I was spending my last coin on personal development magazines, workshops, books… instead of on clothes and shoes. I do love to get dressed and look beautiful, yes, but I was choosing to spend my money on things that were more important to me that time. While many of my friends or colleagues were enjoying shopping, outings with friends or boyfriend, sipping coffees in cafes, watching TV shows… I was writing my blog and articles, reading personal development books, attending self improvement workshops and yoga classes.
Today, I am reaping the benefit of my choices as thanks to all of my hard work I could make my passion for writing a career and today I am a life coach (which is my dream job). I do not believe that I could become good at what I do today without reading all those self help, psychology, personal improvement books and attending so many workshops and trainings. We all have 24 hours a day and whatever money we have available to us, but it all comes down to the choices that we are making every single day, year after year. So, know that whatever choice you do or do not take today will determine how successful you will be next year or in ten years from now.
